SERIE RESEARCH mEmORRIIDn SPATIAL VARIATIONS IN INFLOW RATES OF UNEMPLOYMENT IN THE NETHERLANDS

AMSTERDAM Summarv. There are significant spatial variations in inflows and outflows of unemployment in the Netherlands. In the present paper an attempt is made at providing an explanatory framevork for differences in (male) unemployment inflow rates for Dutch provinces. This partial analysis of spatial differences in unemployment uses a multiple regression analysis to identify the relative importance of various explanatory factors on the unemployment inflow. The results are compared with a similar study for Great Britain and it follows that for both countries demand side factors appear to be major explanatory variables. For the Netherlands, the seasonal sensitivity of the region and the number of vacancies relative to the regional labour force show up as important indicators of the demand effect on unemployment inflow.
